Abstract/Description: A new chemical ionisation mass spectrometer based on a proton transfer reactor (PTR) and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) is described. The resulting instrument, the PTR-TOF-MS, has some analytical features that make it very suitable for analytical applications where real time analysis of complex mixtures is required. Furthermore, the instrument has been designed to allow the PTR section to be removed, and an atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) source to be fitted, to permit comparison across the two techniques.
