EMS 2006 - SFAI

3rd National Meeting on Environmental Mass Spectrometry

11th - 12th April 2006

University of Chester, UK

www.analyticalmethodologycentre.co.uk

Programme
The Scientific Programme of the EMS2006 meeting extends over one and a half days and features environmental and food matrix analysis in four sessions. A fifth session has been organised as a forum/mini workshop. Four 30 minute keynote talks front up the four sessions and are presented by John Upton (Varian), Alan Herod (Imperial College), Chris Wright (Unilever) and Vic Parr (SAI). Two of the twelve 20 minute orals are presented by postgraduate student from Sheffield Hallam and York. Poster and exhibition sessions are also featured. The meeting is organised by the Environmental Mass Spectrometry Special Interests Group of the BMSS in conjunction with the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Chester and sponsored by the parent body, Avanstar (LC-GC Europe), SGE (Europe) and Varian. Multi compound suite using MRM protocols

Low level analyte determination within complex matrices forms the backbone of work within the majority of environmental testing laboratories. Regulation is now demanding a change to the way the majority of laboratories have worked in the past. Not only are the levels of determination being lowered, but ...

APPLICATIONS OF IMAGING MATRIX ASSISTED LASER DESORPTION IONISATION - MASS SPECTROMETRY TO THE STUDY OF DERMAL ABSORPTION OF ISOCYANATES

Isocyanates are commonly used in industry in the manufacture of polyurethane products such as foams, paints and plastics. They are highly reactive compounds, known to produce adverse effects in humans after exposure[1+2]. Dermal exposure is of particular concern although the mechanisms of this are poorly ...

How multi-purpose is multi-residue pesticide analysis for the busy testing laboratory?

CSL owns three Applied Biosystems Sciex API2000 mass spectrometers which are all used for LC-MS/MS determinations, mainly pesticide residues. These are nominally identical instruments. During method development, a number of compound and mass-dependent parameters must be optimised to provide the highest ...

The Supelco “dioxin prep system - florisil version” : a multi-layer silica gel column connected in series to an activated florisil micro-column for rapid determinations of pcdd/fs and pcbs in environment

In 2003, Supelco launched in the UK a new sample preparation kit for rapid clean-up of dioxins, namely polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). The so-called “Dioxin Prep System” was composed of a multi-layer silica gel column and of a dual-layer carbon cartridge ...

LARGE MOLECULES IN THE ENVIRONMENT DETECTED BY MALDI-MS AND SIZE EXCLUSION CHROMATOGRAPHY

Large molecules in environmental samples have been detected initially by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and their presence subsequently confirmed by MALDI-MS. Although SEC does not measure molecular mass, it can be used to estimate molecular mass ranges of polydisperse samples and fractions. The ...

Multi residue analysis of EU black list priority pollutants in drinking and surface water using solid phase extraction and GC Tandem Quadrupole MSMS

EU council directive 76/464/EC1 lists 132 compounds that have restricted levels in drinking and surface waters. Of these compounds, 109 are amenable to gas chromatographic analysis. Currently published methods2 involve the use of two injections, one using selected ion recording as a screen, followed ...

ANALYSIS OF OXIDISED ORGANIC COMPOUNDS IN AEROSOL USING GCxGC-ToF-MS AND THERMAL DESORPTION

There have been many investigations of atmospheric aerosol composition using numerous different techniques and instrumentation. It is important to identify the composition of aerosols, precursors and their affect on the atmosphere and human health. Atmospheric aerosols contain a highly complex organic ...

Investigating sorption of PAHs to soil particles using thermal techniques coupled to MS

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are examples of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) which are widely distributed in soil and sediment in areas around the world where fossil fuel combustion and related activities have been and remain important sources. It is widely acknowledged that PAHs ...

Mass spectrometry and the chemical evaluation of food

Mass spectrometry has been applied to many aspects of the evaluation of food, including the assessment of chemical composition, quality, flavour, authenticity/geographical origin and not least chemical safety. The presentation will review contributions made by mass spectrometry (including hyphenated ...
